Investing in the best full-service lab in Boxholm, Sweden

In recent years, there has been an incredibly rapid development in our industry that requires major new investments and new skills in digital technology. For us dental technicians, this has meant that we have to relearn. And combine the traditional craftsmanship with CAD/CAM to achieve the best results, says Johan Kapusta, at Boxholm Dental.

Boxholm Dental, which is a lab with a prosthetic focus, has recently bought another lab, Boxholm tandteknik with 15 employees. Together they become 50 employees who will move into shared premises in Boxholm during the fall. Boxholm tandteknik works with orthodontics and preventive dental care, which means that the new company can offer full service to its customers.

"Our vision is to become one of the leading labs in Sweden." says Johan. "Since 2012, a younger management team has gradually taken over the business that was originally owned by my father and his two colleagues. Today, I own Boxholm Dental together with Johanna Qvist, who is an economist, and Pia Ringborg, who is a porcelain technician. I myself work mainly with fixed prosthetics and implants. And I look forward to being able to offer all the services that our customers demand."

"The challenge today is to evaluate the investments we need to make. And to beta test the new products we are interested in. We test each new process to determine what the lab should invest in. Just because a new process does the job faster, it doesn't always automatically mean you should change your production method. The end product must be able to compete with what we produce using traditional craftsmanship." says Johan.

Satisfied with the new cutter
"We already had another milling machine before we bought our new caraMill 3.5L bench milling machine. However, as the demand for Zircon and milled temporaries increased, we needed a workhorse that could handle our production. I looked around at several options that were either too small or too big and the caraMill was the only mid-range cutter I found. Although it has many of the characteristics that were very similar to larger industrial mills, it is compact enough to fit in our lab."

"The mill has delivered from day one, the cara Mill really lives up to our expectations and we have not had any downtime so far. We are very happy with this arrangement with Forstec. We also order all sintered CoCr from Forstec's OpenMill production center. And we also buy printed models and other printing services from there."

"The mill is a perfect fit for us as we grow in new premises and expand our operations. Something that I believe is a must in order to cope with major investments. Resources are needed both in terms of money and people to meet all the new things that come on the market. And even more skills in IT. A lot has happened on the implant side in recent years. Implants take up a larger share of our turnover than before. Competence is also very important here, and when we hire younger, newly trained employees, they have often already had practice and experience of new technology. And the overall goal is of course to eventually phase out traditional technology with new digital technology." concludes Johan.
